"Music of deeply spiritual beauty" The Times (UK)
Two legends of the international music scene, Charles Lloyd (USA) and Maria Farantouri (Greece) along with their band, combine forces to bring you The Greek Project. This incredible combination of jazz and classical Greek musicians unveils an unimaginable synthesis of sound and sensibilities.
Lloyd and Farantouri met over a decade ago after a performance she gave in the USA. The pair have been collaborating and sharing musical ideas ever since. Maria Farantouri, whose “voice was a gift from the gods of Olympus…” (The Guardian) has for decades been the voice of Greece. From the 1960s Farantouri’s music was inextricably linked to the protest movement against the Greek military junta of the time. Le Monde has called her “the Joan Baez of the Mediterranean” and after leaving Greece at the age of twenty, Farantouri became a symbol of resistance and hope for many causes including the Greek anti-dictatorship movement.
Dubbed by Carlos Santana as “an international treasure…” Charles Lloyd, is a familiar name to jazz fans. Given his first saxophone at age nine Lloyd’s professional musical career has spanned over five decades. His concerts and recordings are events of pristine beauty and elegance, full of intensely felt emotion and passion that touches deep inside the heart. In the late 1960s Lloyd made headlines when his Quartet became the first jazz group from the USA to be invited to travel to the former USSR. Lloyd has collaborated with a number of rock groups including The Doors, The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few.
